About the Principal Investigator

Prof. Jeoung Han Kim, Ph.D. — Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Hanbat National University.

Prof. Jeoung Han Kim leads the Multi Materials Lab at Hanbat National University, where the group investigates the processing, microstructure, and mechanical behaviour of advanced metallic materials. The lab’s work bridges fundamental science — first-principles calculations, atom-probe characterization, neutron scattering — with applied engineering challenges in joining, additive manufacturing, and materials for extreme environments.

Research philosophy

“The joy of discovery is certainly the liveliest that the mind of man can ever feel.” — Claude Bernard

The group’s research connects atomic-scale mechanisms to component-scale performance, with a strong emphasis on dissimilar-material systems where interfaces govern properties.

Research interests

  • Metal-to-polymer direct bonding — molecular surface treatments for adhesive-free joints (e.g. Al–polypropylene for battery pouches).
  • Additive manufacturing — directed energy deposition and powder bed fusion of dissimilar metals and functionally graded materials.
  • Advanced titanium alloys — aerospace, biomedical, and high-temperature shape-memory alloys.
  • Nuclear & high-temperature structural materials — oxide-dispersion-strengthened steels and molten-salt corrosion.
  • High-entropy alloys — deformation, twinning, and dissimilar welding.

Methods & capabilities

  • Directed energy deposition (DED) & laser/powder processing
  • Atom probe tomography & electron microscopy (EBSD, TEM)
  • Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS)
  • First-principles (DFT) & CALPHAD / ThermoCalc modeling
  • High-temperature mechanical testing & thermomechanical processing
